A 23-year-old has died after a horrific car smash on Marshalls Cross Road. Graham Pinnington was a passenger in a Renault Megane when the it span out of control and hit a parked car on Sunday (June 22).He suffered severe head, leg and internal injuries. Work on the 1,200 home scheme at Moss Nook, off Watery Lane in Sutton, will be suspended at the end of July. Firefighters were attacked by a gang of teenagers as they attempted to tackle a series of rubbish blazes. Crews were called to a blaze at New Street in Sutton when they were met by a large group of hostile youths. The crews, from Parr Stocks Road station, had to fight their way through the crowds in order to douse the flames coming out of a set of wheelie bins. As soon as they returned to their station they were called out to two more incidents in that area on Saturday night (June 14). Each time they were terrorised by the same gang of youths.

An ex-convict has taken a group of troubled young people to a prison in a bid to turn them away from a life of crime. Craig Fletcher, 30, accompanied the youngsters to HMP Wolds in Hull as part of a pilot project entitled Evolution, specialising in deterrence and intervention work. The pilot project, run in conjunction with Helena Housing, was run over three days and was designed by Craig to stop young vandals from making the same mistakes in life that he did. Up to eight youths, aged 11 and upwards, who have caused damage to homes that Helena Housing oversee in the Clock Face area, were referred to meet Craig for help on getting lives on the right track.

Steven Orford suffered a fractured cheekbone, broken arm and severe bruising after being set upon by a pack of yobs in Sutton. His injuries were so severe a metal plate had to be fitted undernearth his cheekbone. Up to 16 girls took part in the sickening attack - which police say was completed unprovoked. The 52-year-old, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, was assaulted as his walked home along Junction Lane.

The helicopter, which could be heard as far away as Rainford, had been broadcasting an appeal over loudspeaker to people in Sutton to help find the woman, said to be in her 60s. The parents of a young man who was savagely beaten in Sherdley Park have today appealed for anyone with information about the shocking attack to contact police. The victim, 18-year-old Craig Rooney, was set upon by a large gang of youths near to the pets corner area of the park during the evening of Thursday May, 22. Craig, who had been in the park with his friends flying a model helicopter when he was attacked, suffered serious head injuries and required emergency surgery. Today (Tuesday) Craig's father Shaun Rooney, and his mother, Sylvia Alderton released a statement via the police in which they said: "Craig is loving, caring and a conscientious teenager. Family and friends have been devastated by the unnecessary, senseless and unprovoked attack on him.

The six-year-old's parents Samantha and Ben, have been told that their daughter's birthday yesterday Friday (June 13), is likely to be her last. Earlier this year they issued an appeal through the St Helens Star to help raise £5,000 for a dream holiday to the French theme park. Money flooded in from kind hearted pensioners to young families, who were touched by the story of the courageous little girl from Sutton Manor, who has a severe form of the genetic condition DiGeorge syndrome.

St Helens Sutton A.C. members competed with distinction in Northern Under 15yrs and Under 17yrs Championships at Wigan. The three club members who competed on the first day of the championships all distinguished themselves. Samantha Fraser won a medal in the U17 shot putt recording 9.39m, Liane Bibby set a personal best (and club record) of 29.43m in the javelin to finish fifth and Tom Green recorded 12.18secs, easing up, having reached the final of the 100m.

Two struggling St Helens secondary schools are among hundreds nationally that could face closure if they do not improve. Sutton High Sports College and Newton High were named on a list of 638 secondary schools across the country targeted because more than 70 per cent of pupils are not achieving five good GCSEs. If the schools do not improve they could either be closed or replaced by privately-backed academies under a £400 million drive to raise standards of education. Sutton High Sports College has been told it must improve because only 29 per cent of pupils are getting five GCSEs grade A to C.

Clock Face Junior Academy has not been open that long - but already it has succeeded in attracting a healthy number of local youngsters keen to master footballing skills. The academy, which largely attracts children from Sutton Manor and Clock Face area, now has two nights a week up at the Shining Light Centre in Sutton Manor, where the youngsters are taught by three qualified coaches and other helpers. And the set-up has been given a double boost after first getting an award of £700 from O2, they have subsequently been given a grant of £450 from St Helens Council.

The victim of a savage gang beating in Sherdley Park remained in a critical condition in hospital today. Twelve days on from the attack, the 18-year-old from Widnes is being kept under sedation in a specialist unit for head injuries in Walton, Liverpool, where members of his devastated family are said to be keeping a beside vigil as he continues his fight for life.
