Event Summary:
People in St Helens are being offered a new way to stretch their legs and their minds at Sutton Manor with the launch of a new orienteering course run by Forestry Commission, Groundwork Merseyside and MEROC.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The Forestry Commission, Groundwork Merseyside and the Merseyside Orienteering Club (MEROC) have teamed up to introduce a 26-point orienteering course on the Sutton Manor woodland site suitable for all ages and abilities.
For the uninitiated, orienteering is a running sport involving navigation with a map and compass and requires some intelligence and decision-making skills. People can also walk or cycle through the course.
The 62-hectare site of the former Sutton Manor colliery provides the ideal terrain for orienteering with its varied network of paths, fences, slopes and hills which is managed by the Forestry Commission and partners.
The trail weaves around 4.5 kilometres of gravel paths through Sutton Manor, with a variety of routes to choose from.
The Merseyside Orienteering Club have designed and produced a specially drawn map for Sutton Manor to allow people to navigate around the course from point to point. The map is available from the Delamere Forest Park Visitor Centre priced at only £2, or by calling 01606 882167.
Each point is called a control and is located at a particular feature on the map. The winner is the person who visits the correct controls in the right order and in the quickest time. You can also have a go at orienteering as an individual challenge.
